Welcome

Welcome

I'm Dr Ian Stewart, an engineer working at the intersection of trade, technology and international security. This site is my way of sharing my work. Here, you can follow my research, see the tools I'm developing, and engage with me.

There are many strands to my work. I am a leading researcher and practitioner in the export control sphere. You can read read my quarterly export control update on this site and follow my research and writing on export controls here too.

I spend much of my time training officials on export controls and sanctions topics. In addition to the in-person trainings that I run, you can learn more about my efforts to use elearning (including AI-enabled eleanring) here.

I also build AI tools to help companies and government cope with trade and international security challenges. This includes experimenting with how AI can help with problems such as export control technology classification, sanctions screening, and open source intelligence analysis. You can read more about this here.

The final strand of my work relates to nonproliferation and disarmament research. While you can follow my research on this site, much of my efforts in this area are housed on my site, NonproArchive.com.

My main role is with the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies at Middlebury College where I run the Washington DC office. I also selectively undertake outside initiatives be they consultancy projects, the provision of training courses, or the commercialisation and deployment of my AI tools.

Please subscribe to stay up to date with my work.
